The Piranha V armored vehicles from the new batch for the Romanian Army will be equipped with Cardom launchers produced in Romania

The next batch of Piranha V armored personnel carriers that will enter the equipment of the Romanian armed forces will be equipped with autonomous mortars of the Cardom Spear type, of caliber 120 mm, by Elbit Systems, which will be produced in our country.

Elmet Group presented at Black Sea Defense & Aerospace 2022 (BSDA) the Cardom launcher, which will be produced in Romania in Bacau.

The Cardom is a 120 mm mortar developed by Elbit Systems that can hit targets at over 7 kilometers.

In the discussions held with Elmet representatives, they told us that the system is completely produced in Romania and the launcher will be equipped on the next batch of 26 Piranha V transporters.

In other configurations the carriers can serve as armored ambulance, recovery, command, but in the equipment of our Army Piranha V they are also in the configuration where they are equipped with an Elbit turret with a 30 mm cannon.

The next batch of 26 Piranha Vs will feature 120mm Cardom launchers, mounted directly on the floor of the vehicle.

Furthermore, the Elmet representatives specified that the mortar can also use intelligent ammunition, although this type of ammunition is not used by the Romanian Army.

"It can also integrate smart ammunition guided by GPS, which at the moment is not used in Romania. A modification of the software, however, would allow the use of this type of ammunition as well", the representatives of Elmet specified to us, who emphasized that all the components of the system are produced in Romania, by Elmet, a company owned by the giant Elbit Systems.

Providing the Romanian armed forces with Piranha V armored personnel carriers
Piranha V will be built in Romania based on a joint-venture agreement between Uzina Mecanică Bucharest (UMB) and the American giant General Dynamics European Land Systems Romania (GDELS Romania).

Romania started the essential endowment program '8x8 armored personnel carrier', after which the big winner was Piranha V, it was initiated, in November 2017, by a Decision of the Government of Romania, by which the circumstances and the specific procedure related to the first stage were approved, in order to award a framework agreement for the supply of 227 armored personnel carriers and derivatives on the Piranha V platform and initial logistic support to General Dynamics European Land Systems - Mowag GmbH.

Starting this year, the conveyors will be produced in our country.

Elbit Systems – an example of industrial cooperation between Romania and Israel

Romania produces sophisticated military equipment for armies all over the world. Romania and Israel have been cooperating in the military field for many years, and Elbit Systems is the best example of this.
Elbit Systems is Israel's leading arms industry company. However, few know that this company was founded by Romanian Jews who left Romania after the Second World War.

After 1989, Elbit Systems invested in Romania in four production facilities located in Bacău and Bucharest, with over 800 employees. Elbit Systems has been, over time, a partner for Romania in modernization programs such as Mig 21 Lancer, IAR 99, Puma Socat. Endowment programs such as Piranha 5 or NATO class II Watchkeeper X drones are the latest projects for which Israel and Romania cooperate in the industrial field through Elbit Systems, which has quickly become one of the largest arms manufacturing companies in Romania.

3 companies, 4 factories, over 800 specialists
Through the three companies in Romania that operate four factories, with over 800 specialists, Elbit Systems is one of the most important players in the defense industry in Romania. At AE Electronics Bacău, electronic components are produced and technical solutions are developed. At Elmet International with two open factories in Bacău and Bucharest, systems and subsystems for hardware equipment are produced, and at the factory in Măgurele there is a production and integration center for turrets and remotely controlled weapons for the locally produced Piranha 5 military vehicles. Also in Măgurele , at the Simultec factory, training elements and simulators used in all aviation systems are produced. In addition to these factories, Elbit Systems has also developed a Center of Excellence for Artillery, where Romanian specialists and engineers develop advanced technical solutions used in programs around the world. Elbit Systems' strategy is to integrate technology in local production, but also in factories in Romania. With an experience of over 27 years, Romania develops technical solutions, as well as software, assembly and export solutions for customers from all over the world.

The Israelis from Elbit build in Romania the turrets for export and for the armored vehicles of the Romanian Army

A varied range of turrets and mortars are entirely designed and produced in Romania and are also exported for various armies of the world, announces the Israeli company Elbit Systems. For the Romanian Army, the company produces the turrets for the Piranha 5 armored personnel carrier, as well as the turret for the 4x4 armored vehicle for the Special Operations Forces.
For the Piranha 5 carrier, Elbit Systems manufactures entirely in Romania the two types of remote-controlled turrets, one with a 30mm cannon and one with a 12.7mm machine gun.

According to the company, the turrets are designed in Bucharest, the mechanical parts are produced at Elmet Bacău, and the turrets are then assembled in the latest Elmet factory in Măgurele. The turrets are then mounted on the conveyors at UMB, where Mowag-General Dynamics do part of the final assembly of the conveyors.

"We will soon deliver the next tranche of turns for the next tranche of Piranha 5 transporters. 10 of these turns have already been completed and are ready for delivery. For the Piranha 5 turrets, we are working with Romanian suppliers such as IOR, PRO Optica or Interactive", Elbit Systems representatives explain.

Also, the Romanian turret produced by Elbit with a 12.7mm machine gun can be mounted on any 4x4 platform and is "an entirely Romanian solution", says the company that brought an Oshkosh JLTV armored vehicle to a presentation event at the Măgurele factory to exemplify the installation of the remote-controlled turret, an armored model that Romania chose for the Special Operations Forces.

"However, the turret produced by Elbit in Romania can be mounted and adapted for any 4x4 platform according to the needs of the Romanian Army", claims the company.

Elbit Systems has been present in Romania for over 27 years and has been involved in several military endowment and modernization programs launched by the Ministry of Defense.

According to the company, Elbit Systems participated as the main supplier in major modernization programs of the Romanian army: for the air forces - (MIG-21 Lancer, PUMA-Socat, IAR-99 Șoim, C-130), for the land forces (LAROM, Pirahna ), for naval forces (Puma-Naval and naval simulators), etc.

Elbit Systems has four production units in Romania, as sole shareholder:

  • Simultec (Măgurele) - Produces simulators for air, land and naval forces, develops software programs and hardware integration.
  • A/E Electronics (Bacău) - Produces and tests electronic subassemblies, for military and civil purposes.
  • Elmet (Bacău) - Produces electromechanical systems and subsystems, including manned and remote-controlled turrets (12.7mm/25mm/30mm).
  • Elmet (Măgurele) - Production facility for land systems that will function as a production and integration center for turrets and battle stations contracted by Elbit Systems within local programs, but also as a regional hub designed to cover the demand for such systems for other countries.
